Walnut Heights Swim Club Board Announcement

Please join the Board of the Walnut Heights Swim Club for a General Membership Meeting on May 6, 2023 at 5:30 pm at the Walnut Heights Pool. The Board has proposed an assessment to cover the cost of replastering the pool and we need to vote as a community on the proposed assessment. As co-owners of the club, we are asking for your participation. Please continue reading for more details.

Contra Costa County Health Services has notified Walnut Heights Swim Club that the pool shell is degrading on the floor and walls.  Small pits and pop offs are occurring and plans must be made to resurface the pool. The cost of resurfacing the main pool and the wading pool is estimated to be approximately $110,000.

The Board of the Walnut Heights Swim Club recommends that an assessment to each member shall be made according to the chart shown below. According to our bylaws, for the assessment to pass, forty percent (40%) of registered members must approve.

Assessment FAQs

  1. What does this project entail? A complete replastering of the main pool and the wading pool.

  1. When will the work be completed? The work is scheduled for November 2023, after the pool is closed for the season.

  1. Will this affect summer pool hours? No, Walnut Heights pool will be open for Summer 2023 and 2024 operations.

  1. Why doesn’t the swim club have enough money in reserve to cover the replastering without an assessment?  Past Boards have prioritized low membership dues to keep the pool as accessible as possible.  As a private club, we are not governed by the same legal requirements as an HOA and the Board of Directors has the discretion to set priorities.

  1. Why do newer members pay less?  The pool replastering is a long-term maintenance project and the Board tried to allocate the assessment as fairly as possible.

  1. Will the board create a capital improvement fund for future projects?  Yes.

  1. Why don’t we fundraise?  Our Maintenance Chair explored that option, but found that there were not enough interested members to plan a fundraiser that could raise the full amount.

  1. When will the assessment be due? If the assessment passes, the full amount will be due June 9, 2023.

  1. Can I make instalment payments? If the full amount poses a hardship for you, please reach out to our treasurer to work out a payment plan.

  1. Do Trial Members have to pay? 2023 Trial Members do not have to pay at this time. If they decide to join in 2024, they will pay the $450 new member special assessment then.

  1. How many people in my family should vote?  Each membership (family) gets one vote.

  1. Are 2023 Trial Members eligible to vote? No. Only registered members are eligible to vote.

  1. What if the assessment is not approved by the members?  If the assessment is not approved the pool will be cited by the health department and will be closed to both recreational and team swimming.  THERE WILL BE NO POOL……
